Scraper systems are used to remove solids that settle at the bottom of such sand traps from the tank. The sand is pushed into the groove at the bottom of the channel by scrapers moving bi-directionally along the sand trap, and from there it is sucked from the tank by air-lift or submersible pumps. This sludge, which is mixed with water, is generally passed through a sand washing or separation unit to remove organic matter and is collected in sand containers and transported out of the facility. Sand trap scrapers can be arranged to scrape single, two, three or four channels. In small-sized facilities, the sand washing unit can be mounted on the scraper bridge.
